An insomniac, retired medical examiner is on a solo fall foliage trip in New England. While gazing at the Chenango River through his hotel window in the wee hours of the night, he sees two hooded guys dumping a sack into the river. The next day, he hears on the radio that a poetry workshop professor at a local university is missing and that the police suspect foul play. The doctor calls his wife, an avid mystery reader, and tells her the story. She suggests a visit to the campus in search of clues. There he learns that the professor, his girlfriend and a graduate student spent time together at an archaeological excavation in England. When they returned, they were estranged. Working with a local police lieutenant, the doctor finds whose body was dumped into the river and participates in a standoff and arrest of the felons. But, thats only the beginning. A year earlier, a teenage girl escapes domestic abuse and is sheltered by a divorced and depressed poetry professor who desperately misses his five-year-old daughter. A multifaceted relationship evolves between them, at first a mutually supportive and affectionate one, and later, after a chain of professional and personal reverses, a romantic and destructive one. Frantic to resume paying child support and to reconnect with his biological daughter, the professor steals artifacts from the grave of a medieval English abbot. This leads to an altercation between the professor and his student and to the dumping of one by the other into the Chenango River. In court, an expert examines the stolen artifacts and determines that they were religious but not Christian and that the abbot was a 16th century victim of the Spanish Inquisition. This is not a run-of-the-mill who-done-it. It is a Rashomon-esque story, interweaving mystery and an intricate love affair.
